TeamSpeak vs Discord for gaming guilds

By the NoCap Bots teamView as Markdown

Discord wins on everything around the fight: your members are already there, there's no server to rent, and text, events and roles come built in. TeamSpeak still wins in the fight itself, because whisper lists let one commander talk into several channels at once. Most guilds now run on Discord and add a voice relay to get that back.

Why guilds moved to Discord#

Not because the voice is better. Because everything around the fight is: recruitment happens in Discord, sign-ups happen in Discord, the guild's memes happen in Discord. Asking a new recruit to install a second voice client and type in a server address loses some of them before their first raid.

  • One place. Chat, events, sign-ups and voice in the same app your members open every day.
  • Nothing to run. No server rental, no slot count, no updates on raid night.
  • Bots for the rest. Sign-ups, roles and moderation are a bot away — we list the ones guilds use in the best Discord bots for gaming guilds.

What guilds miss from TeamSpeak#

One thing, mostly: whisper. On TeamSpeak a commander could hold a hotkey and talk into every squad's channel at once, while squads kept chatting among themselves. Discord has nothing like it. A Discord account holds one voice connection, and your voice reaches only the channel you're in — why that is.

Without whisper, guilds on Discord fall back to one of two bad options: everyone in one channel, so party leaders can't talk to their party without talking over the caller, or parties in their own channels, with leaders repeating every call late.

Getting whisper back on Discord#

A voice relay does the whisper's job with bots. One bot listens in the callers' channel; a speaker bot in each party channel plays what it hears. The caller talks once and every party hears them, about a tenth to three tenths of a second later, while still talking among themselves. How it works has the details, and how to whisper to other channels on Discord maps each TeamSpeak whisper setup to its Discord equivalent.

The other direction — a squad leader reaching the commander — uses Discord's own Priority Speaker key, carried back to the callers by the relay. That's talk back.

Which should your guild use?#

Friends, one group at a timeDiscord. One voice channel is all you need.
One or two parties, one fightDiscord, everyone in one channel.
Four or more parties, raids, sieges or zergsDiscord with a voice relay, so parties keep their own channels and everyone hears the caller.

Moving from TeamSpeak to Discord#

  1. Rebuild the channel tree

One voice channel for callers and one per squad. Our gaming guild server template has a layout to copy.

  2. Turn server groups into roles

Officers, callers and squad leaders each become a Discord role.

  3. Turn talk power into permissions

Limit who can speak in the callers' channel, and give squad leaders Priority Speaker in their squad channel.

  4. Turn the whisper list into speaker channels

Every channel the commander used to whisper to gets a speaker bot. Getting started takes about ten minutes.

  5. Run both for a week

Keep the TeamSpeak server up for a week or two of raids, then let it lapse.
