Topic: Comparisons

> Mumble is still the voice server you can control end to end, and its shouts to linked channels are made for fleets. Discord is where your members already are, with nothing to host. Guilds that switch keep the fight-time structure by relaying the commander into each squad channel.

## At a glance

| | Mumble | Discord |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hosting | Self-hosted or rented server; open source. | Nothing to host. |
| Audio | Opus, low latency, quality you tune yourself. | Opus with good defaults and noise suppression. |
| Channels | Nested and linked channels; whisper and shout to them. | Flat voice channels in categories; one channel at a time. |
| Permissions | Detailed ACLs per channel and group. | Roles and channel overrides, plus Priority Speaker. |
| Identity | Certificates, or accounts on your own server. | Discord accounts, which members already have. |
| Community | Voice only. | Text, threads, events, onboarding and bots. |

## Who still runs Mumble

Groups that want to own their voice server: large EVE alliances and coalitions with their own infrastructure, and guilds that rely on shouts to linked channels. For them, a channel tree of Fleet → Wings → Squads with a commander shouting down it is the whole point.

## Why guilds move anyway

- Recruits already have Discord; nobody needs a certificate or a server address.
- Sign-ups, announcements and voice live in one app.
- No server to keep patched and paid for.

The cost of moving is the shout. A Discord account talks only to the channel it's in, so a commander can't reach every wing. That is the same problem TeamSpeak guilds have when they move — we covered it in [TeamSpeak vs Discord for gaming guilds](https://www.nocapbots.com/blog/teamspeak-vs-discord.md).

## Keeping the shout on Discord

Map the tree onto channels and put a [speaker bot](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/speaker-bots.md) in each wing or squad channel. The commander talks in the command channel and the relay plays them into every one. For a coalition where each alliance has its own Discord, two servers can be linked so one FC reaches both — see [alliances](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/alliances.md).

| Mumble | Discord with Voice Relay |
| --- | --- |
| Shout to subchannels | One speaker bot per wing or squad channel. |
| Linked channels across groups | Voice teams within one server, or a cross-server relay between two. |
| ACL for who may shout | Caller roles: only they are relayed. |
| Whisper up to command | Priority Speaker key, carried back by [talk back](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/talk-back.md). |

Running fleets? [Fleet comms for EVE Online on Discord](https://www.nocapbots.com/games/eve-online) has a channel layout with wings, logi and scouts.

## Put it into practice

- [How Voice Relay carries Discord voice](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/how-it-works.md): Why Discord voice needs bots to reach several channels, how the speaker bots relay audio with no transcoding, and what latency to expect.
- [Alliances: relay across two Discord servers](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/alliances.md): Link two Discord servers with a single-use invite code so one caller reaches the speaker channels of both. The allied server gets Guild Master free.
- [Speaker bots: one bot per party channel](https://www.nocapbots.com/docs/voice-relay/speaker-bots.md): How the Callout speaker bots work: one slot per channel on your plan, an invite button each, picking channels, private channels and stage channels.
